Ranks and How to Get Them

King / Queen ; Often there is only one or the other, with a King's mate being known as a Lesser, and a Queen's mate being known as a Greater. Kings and Queens are the equivalent of a pack alpha. However, they are not chosen on brawn or intelligence, but simply by birthright. Because of this, Kings or Queens are not given the authority within the pack to make important decisions, and instead, this is left up to the Diviners who are acutely in tune with nature.

The Kings and Queens are for moral support and guidance, and are the only wolves that can accept new members into the pack. They are the first to eat, and rarely accompany the hunt.

To become a King or Queen, you must be the oldest direct decent of the bloodline. There is no other way, unless a King or Queen is murdered. If there are no offspring to take the position, the male Diviner will take the spot of either King or Queen.

Together, a King and his Lesser or a Queen and her Greater are known as Highers.

Diviners (2) ; Equivalent to a pack's beta pair, these two wolves are the 'assistants' of the King or Queen. They provide the Highers with valuable information and suggestions, acquired from their observation of the natural world.

Diviners are born with a natural ability to sense the forces of nature, and predict the events of days to come through the flight patterns of birds, cloud formations, and other such natural events. It is their decision to share their findings, or keep it to themselves, but it is a Diviner's duty to protect the pack spiritually. Providing them with guidance and insight into the workings of nature, or the near (or far) future is their initial job.

Most Diviners are the offspring of past Diviners, though, any young Novice can train in the art. It does not take an inherited skill, but, it does take many, many years to perfect. It is an incredibly important job, so Novices must be incredibly willing to sacrifice time with friends and family to learn the specific ways to Divine.

Diviners do not have to be coupled with their Divining partner, but if they choose a mate outside of their partner, then this mate is known as a Red. Instead of saying that a wolf is the mate of a Diviner, they will say, "I am his/her Red." Diviners may be both male, male/female, or both female.

Prophets (2) ; Very much like Diviners, Prophets use signs to predict the future of the pack's success. However, Prophets relay signs through visions and dreams, rather than observation.

The prophecies that a Prophet predicts are taken very seriously, and like a Divining, are very important in the future of the pack. Prophecies are not taken lightly, and are often cryptic messages from the Prophet's ancestors. Again, it is the Prophet's duty to share this news with the pack.

Becoming a Prophet is not easy. One must be born Divine, a sign that is noticed early on in development. One easy sign is that the wolf is born with black fur, though, this is the least reliable. Most offspring of a Prophet--or Diviner--will also be born Divine, so more often than not, a Prophet's pups (if they bear any) will be forced to train as a Novice. If there are no offspring, and no pup is shown to be Divine, then the pack will be without a Prophet until one is born.

Like Diviners, Prophets may take a mate outside of their partnership with the other Prophet. If this is done, then the Prophet's mate is known as a Hue. "I am his/her Hue," instead of "I am his/her mate."

Prophets and Diviners eat second in line, after the Highers.

Healer of Wounds ; There is only one Healer of Wounds. More often than not, the wolf that takes this job is male, and their counterpart (Healer of Mind) is female. The job of healing a wolf's physical injuries takes many seasons of practice, to learn the herbs and the techniques, so those who are picked to train as a Healer are expected to be patient and trustworthy. Healers may not always be the sweet-tempered of wolves on the outside, but always should a Healer have another's best interests on the inside.

Healer of Mind ; Unlike a Healer of Wounds, this wolf must heal the mental, emotional injuries. Baggage or emotional scars sustained in battle need to be healed just as much as a flesh wound, but this takes much more time and practice. Knowing what and how the injuries were caused is a large part of the job, and not every wolf will know how one came about being depressed or repressed. Ridding a patient of these unseen injuries is dirty work, and not always will a Healer succeed.
